Carolina Malmedal is the Senator Washington County Voters Deserve to have Represent them in Salem.
"I’m standing up for those of us who are frustrated seeing Oregon’s race to failure.
We deserve better. Please join me in electing better leadership in Salem." ~ Carolina Malmedal
Oregon ranks in the middle of the country for education funding, and we're one of the worst for on-time graduation rates. Most recently, the legislature has reduced accountability by not requiring academic testing for kids, even as a benchmark to catch students up after online lockdowns. We need more flexibility with budgets, more accountability and transparency for school districts, more choice for families, and a legislator who votes for the needs of students first.
Oregon is less safe because legislators have systematically voted to reduce criminal sentences, even for violent offenders, while tying the hands of law enforcement from being able to effectively do their jobs. By abdicating its responsibility for addiction services, the state's actions have spurred an increase in drug addiction and crimes related to addiction. We need better drug treatment, mental health services, and more support for the criminal justice system.
After two years of Covid-19 mandates and billions of dollars in new tax increases, small business owners are tired and frustrated. Big companies are directing their investments out of Washington County and out of state. We deserve lawmakers who understand that healthy businesses are the support structure for our state. Job creators in Oregon should be thanked, not punished.
More money isn't the sole solution to ensuring more affordable housing at every level of needed housing inventory: starter homes, middle income homes, and temporary housing for those in need. We can't tax and spend our way into building more affordable housing. We need to work to reduce the costs of systems and development charges and incentivize more construction. Everyone deserves to have a safe place to call home.
Higher gas prices and proposed freeway tolls, along with special-interest fuel programs, are unnecessarily driving up commuting costs for working families. Plans in Salem to do regional freeway tolling won't get new roads built, but it will cause more congestion on side streets and in our neighborhoods. We need to work on incentives for businesses to allow work-from-home as a permanent option for their employees and shift existing transportation funds to build out better road infrastructure.
While lawmakers both celebrate record-high revenue (and still tell us how it's not enough money), they fail to realize that this record-high revenue is tax dollars that have come from taxpayer's pockets. Corporate Activities Taxes on basic necessities like groceries and drug prices, and policies that drive up gas, home heating, and housing costs. We need legislators that respect taxpayers and who will work to keep our state budgets balanced - to live within our means, not just raise taxes and ask for more money.
Together we can bring real change the to the Oregon Legislature.
